Northeastern Co-Op Program

Assistant Research Investigator Position

Level Investigations is proud to partner with Northeastern University to offer six-month co-op positions to students enrolled in NU's School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. Our co-op program provides hands-on, real-world experience for students pursuing careers in criminal justice, criminal defense, investigation, law, and the broader legal field.

Co-ops at Level work closely with our investigators and case management team on active assignments. They contribute meaningfully to the investigative and legal support work the firm is built on, and leave with substantive experience that translates directly to law school, federal hiring, graduate study, and careers in investigation.

About the Role

The Assistant Research Investigator position is built around legal investigative support, with significant independence and a wide range of responsibilities. The exact mix of work varies based on the firm's caseload and the co-op's strengths, but typically includes:

  • Open-source intelligence (OSINT) research and subject background investigation
  • Reviewing discovery materials and legal documentation across active cases
  • Drafting investigative reports and case summaries for attorneys
  • Communicating directly with clients, witnesses, and counsel
  • Locating individuals, conducting background research, and assisting with witness preparation
  • Supporting field investigation, including site visits and documentation
  • Managing administrative case files and the firm's day-to-day operations

The role blends desk-based legal research with field investigation, and co-ops are trusted with sensitive information under strict confidentiality from day one. Because much of the work supports active criminal defense and civil matters, co-ops gain direct exposure to the practical realities of legal investigation, attorney workflow, and the courts — experience that has proven especially valuable for students bound for law school or federal service.

Past Co-Ops

We are grateful to the students who have contributed to Level Investigations over the years. Many have gone on to careers in law, criminal justice, federal service, and graduate study.
